Senior
Efficacy
SANIMED Senior is tailored to the nutritional needs of older cats of all breeds
(National Research Council, 2006). The most significant causes of natural death or
euthanasia in cats are urinary tract disorders, kidney failure, heart failure, diabetes
mellitus and cancer. Just like SANIMED Adult, SANIMED Senior is compiled
to decrease the risk of the mentioned diseases. The characteristics are further
enhanced in SANIMED Senior.
Both struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis develop in older cats. (Bartges et
al., 2004) Discouraging the formation of struvite crystals / stones can be achieved
through a low urine pH and low concentra-tions of struvite forming components
(magnesium, ammonia, phosphate). An extremely low urine pH is however
undesired because of the extra risk of the formation of calcium oxalate (Bartges
et al., 2004). SANIMED Senior therefore reduces the urine pH to approximately
6.8. The food contains relatively low amounts of magnesium, phosphorus and
protein in order to reduce the concentrations of struvite forming components.
The low protein content, in combination with a low calcium content, reduces the
concentrations of calcium oxalate forming components (Bartges et al., 2004).
The amounts of phosphorus and protein in SANIMED Senior are lower than in
SANIMED Adult.
The high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E in SANIMED Senior will
contribute to an extended life of your cat (Cupp et al., 2006). The body condition
of the senior cat however also determines, to an important degree, their life
expectancy (Scarlett and Donoghue, 1998). An exces-sive condition increases the
risk of cancer, diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis and heart failure. A body condition
that is too thin is however also undesirable in an ageing cat because it coincides
with the loss of muscle mass (Pérez-Camargo, 2004). The specific composition of
SANIMED Senior reduces the risk of the mentioned diseases, but the cat’s body
condition should be monitored. An individual cat should be fed SANIMED Senior
in such an amount that their ideal condition is achieved and main-tained.
