Adult

Efficacy

SANIMED Adult is tailored to the lower nutritional requirements of adult cats
of all breeds (National Research Council, 2006). The sources of proteins, fats
and carbohydrates are of a high quality and as a result digestion improves and
thereby also defecation. The crude fibre content, of which a portion is moderately
fermentable, promotes the integrity of the colonic mucous membrane, stimulates
intestinal motility and the expelling of well formed stools (Hallman et al., 1995).

Optimum supply of essential nutrients to the cat, including essential fatty acids,
linoleic acid, ar-achidonic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), improves the condition of the skin and coat
(MacDonald et al., 1983) and the immune function (Bauer, 1994). The high content
of EPA furthermore leads to the synthesis of eicosanoids, which act as an inhibitor
against inflammation, therewith suppressing atopic reactions (Harvey, 1993).

Struvite urolithiasis can develop in adult cats, resulting in disorders of the
lower urinary tract. Discouraging the formation of struvite can be achieved
through a low urine pH and a low concentration of struvite forming components
(magnesium, ammonia, phosphate). SANIMED Adult reduces the urine pH to
approximately 6.3 and contains relatively low amounts of magnesium, phosphorus
and protein in order to reduce the concentrations of struvite forming components
(Osborne et al., 1990). Because adult cats no longer grow, the amount of
magnesium, phosphorus and protein in SANIMED Adult is lower.

To reduce the risk of cancer, SANIMED Adult contains extra Vitamin E as a natural
antioxidant whereby the formation of free radicals and oxidative damage is
fought (Jewell et al., 2000). SANIMED Adult is rich in EPA which also discourages
the occurrence of cancer (Cowing and Saker, 2001) and may possibly keep
osteoarthritis at bay (Schoenherr, 2005). The risk of kidney failure is reduced
through extra Vitamin E (Yu and Paetau-Robinson, 2006), the high content of EPA
(Plantinga et al., 2005) and in particular, through the low phosphorus content
(Beynen, 2006).

SANIMED Adult contains a relatively low protein content - the protein sources
have a high biological value and are easily digestible - reducing ammonia and
area production, providing relief to the liver and kidneys. Through the addition
of dietary fibre with a high viscosity, the absorption speed of glucose is reduced,
which reduces the risk of diabetes mellitus (Kirk, 2006). SANIMED Adult has a low
sodium content to control blood pressure and in conjunction with an adequate
taurine supply, contributes to maintenance of heart function (Torin et al., 2007).
